Why Do I Need a Water Softener?
- by siteadmin
Water softeners reduce water's hardness, making it soft and clean with no trace of rust, soap scum or other buildup.
Most people buy a water softener to combat their hard water, which contains calcium and magnesium minerals. However, there may be some reasons why you might not require such an appliance.
1. Softer Skin and Hair
Water softeners remove hardness minerals like calcium and magnesium from your home's plumbing, eliminating stains on dishes and appliances, clogged pipes, and soaps and shampoos that don't dissolve properly.
Water softeners utilize an ion exchange process to eliminate unwanted minerals. This involves passing water through a bed of spherical resin beads made from plastic polystyrene.
2. Less Soap
Water that has hard minerals (calcium and magnesium) tends to have less soap in it, since they don't allow soap particles to cling and suspend dirt like soft water does.
This results in less soap scum in the water, as well as a thorough rinse of soap away from skin and clothes. This keeps skin and hair moisturized while also increasing the lifespan of appliances.
3. Less Scale Buildup
Scale is a layer of calcium and magnesium bicarbonate that accumulates on water-using appliances, pipes, utensils, faucets and other household items. It forms due to dissolved minerals like calcium and magnesium bicarbonate in tap water.
Water softeners help prevent scale and mineral buildup by decreasing the amount of dissolved minerals in tap water. This minimizes the risk of damage to plumbing systems, clogged pipes, and other issues.
4. Less Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Water softeners use ion exchange technology to trap and eliminate hard minerals such as calcium and magnesium. Unfortunately, during this process the resin beads become saturated with these impurities, needing to be recharged – a procedure which consumes considerable amounts of water.
Water softening is a major source of greenhouse gases as well. Installing a water softener can reduce these emissions to the same degree that taking one and a half cars off the road for an entire year!
5. Longer Appliance Lifespan
Water softeners can dramatically extend the lifespan of your appliances, such as washing machines and dishwashers. By preventing minerals from building up in these machines, they not only increase their longevity but also performance.
Appliances that use water are vulnerable to damage from minerals like calcium and magnesium, which can affect their efficiency and quality. If these minerals build up in your plumbing, they could clog pipes and cause irreversible harm, leading to costly repairs or full replacements.
6. Cleaner Dishes and Laundry
When washing dishes or clothes, soft water makes all the difference. It won't stain or leave behind residue like hard water does.
Dish soap and laundry detergent differ due to their surfactants, which are long molecules with water-loving at one end and oil-loving at the other.
7. Lower Water Bills
Water softener systems eliminate calcium and magnesium ions that cause hard water, eliminating limescale buildup as well as other issues caused by hard water on appliances, fixtures, and pipes.
Water softeners can also save you money on your water bills, since hard water makes the hot water tank work harder and consume more energy.
8. Less Soap Scum
Soap scum is an unsightly, white residue that accumulates on shower curtains, tubs, sinks and the inside of your washer. It consists of hard-water mineral deposits combined with soap, dirt, body oils and dead skin – all items not meant for your bathroom.
Soap scum attracts mold and mildew, leaving surfaces looking dirty and smelling musty. A water softener can help prevent this buildup of grime.
